Netflix is finally ready to bring 4K streaming to PCs, running only on Microsoft Edge browsers. Even while TVs and set-top-boxes already have support for 4K Netflix streaming, PCs have missed out due to fears of digital piracy. Now, Windows 10 PCs that have the seventh generation Intel Core processors (Kaby Lake) installed will be able to watch Netflix in 4K on the Microsoft Edge browser.
“Your binge-watching favorites on Netflix are now available in 4K exclusively on compatible PCs and 2-in-1 devices, on Windows 10. Check out the new streaming experience with Microsoft Edge, the only browser that supports Netflix 4K content,” Microsoft said in a blog post.
Microsoft is using the launch of 4K Netflix also as a marketing effort to make people change over to the Edge browser. The company is also promoting the new episodes of the Gilmore Girls along with this announcement. Talking about the reduced battery consumption of the Edge browser (as compared to competitors) Microsoft said that users will be able to find the battery to watch at least one extra episode.
Netflix had announced last month that it added over 50 per cent more subscribers during the third quarter of the year thanks to its original series “Stranger Things” gaining international viewership, which saw its shares soaring 20 per cent in late trade. The company said that it added close to 3.2 million subscribers internationally in the third quarter.
Netflix has expanded into more than 130 markets worldwide, including most major countries, except China. The multinational entertainment company has a range of popular-original shows that include “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black”.
