An explosion in old Delhi’s Naya Bazar area on Tuesday morning left one person dead and at least five others injured. The explosion took place very close to a mosque in Chandni Chowk area, news agency ANI reported. Preliminary probe revealed that the man, killed in the explosion, was carrying a bag containing explosive material. He was reportedly smoking when the blast occurred. The man is believed to be a native of West Bengal and has arrived in Delhi on Monday night.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh , who is in Bahrain, spoke to Police Commissioner Alok Verma and took stock of the situation. He also sought report from Delhi police on the incident. PTI reported that the commissioner was instructed to arrest those involved in the incident and take all measures to ensure peace in the city.
Rescue efforts were carried out to assist those affected by the blast. Delhi Police’s anti-terror wing and personnel from its special cell along with crime and forensic teams reached the site of the blast to pick up samples. Naya Bazar is a highly congested area, with houses and shops on either side of narrow lanes.
CCTV footage of the incident showed a man carrying a bundle of explosive material and walking through a narrow street in Naya Bazar. The man is later seen placing the bundle down thereby setting off the explosion. Smoke fills the street and people can be seen scurrying to safety.
Delhi Police personnel have been maintaining a tight vigil in view of the festive season. This incident has heightened the state of alertness across the national capital region. The area is known for Diwali shoppers looking for firecrackers. Forensic teams and officers from the Special Cell are on the spot and collecting samples. Further details are awaited.
