Former cricketer and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Navjot Singh Sindhu will join the ranks of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on August 15, Independence Day, reports suggest. The party expects this move to be symbolic, and Sidhu shall be seen as getting freedom from the repressive regime of BJP.
Although it hasn’t been officially announced by the AAP, NDTV reported the politician’s independence day plan, quoting its sources within the party. Earlier this month, Sidhu quit the Rajya Sabha after which both, the AAP as well as the Congress party were vying for him. However, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal was confident that the former Rajya Sabha MP will join his party. Neither of the two leaders have spoken publicly on the matter.
Following his resignation, he announced the reason for his decision. He said that the BJP leadership asked him to “not even look at” Punjab, a state that’s going to polls next year. Sidhu is expected to play a major role and has been described as a star-campaigner for the Punjab elections. However, AAP sources have denied his admission into the party ranks as a Chief Ministerial candidate, the report added.
AAP has challenged the BJP and Akali-Dal alliance in Punjab. Sidhu’s wife is a BJP MLA from Amritsar in the state, and is speculated to follow her husband into AAP. She will not resigning anytime soon, so as to avoid by-elections. But she will join AAP before next year’s elections.
