NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly is back from spending 340 days in space, on the ISS, and has grown 2 inches in that period of time.
Kelly's trip to space was part of NASA's "Twin Study", which is a year-long investigation into the subtle changes that may have occurred to Scott Kelly, analyzed in comparison to his twin brother - Mark Kelly - who remained on Earth.
The study is comprised of 10 different investigations in total, but, most obviously, Scott Kelly is now 2 inches taller than his twin brother. NASA's Jeff Williams said, "Astronauts get taller in space as the spine elongates, but they return to preflight height after a short time back on Earth.”
Twin Study is part of NASA's preparation for a crewed mission to Mars, and closely looks at effects on vision, bones and muscles, space radiation, potential shrinking of the heart and the effects that long-term isolation can have on mental health.
Kelly set the record for the most consecutive days spent in space by an American before returning to Earth on Tuesday, and is set to spend the next year monitoring his health.
