New Delhi:Nearly six months after coming to power, Prime Minister Narendra Modion Sunday initiated his first cabinet expansion, inducting 21 new faces—four cabinet ministers, three ministers of state with independent charge and 14 ministers of state.

Among the bigger names in the cabinet expansion were those of former Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, Chaudhary Birender Singhof Haryana who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the Congress party, Suresh Prabhu, a former Shiv Sena minister in the Vajpayee government, and Jagat Prakash Nadda, BJP general secretary and former minister in the Himachal Pradesh government.

The inductees also include several first time members of Parliament, and politicians from three states where assembly elections are due in the coming years—Bihar (2015), West Bengal (2016) and Uttar Pradesh (2017).

The three states are crucial for the BJP as the leader of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is looking to form the government in these three states.

The potential impact of elections in these three states in national politics can be gauged from the fact that they account for 162 Lok Sabha seats and the BJP under Modi won 95 of these seats.

Of the 21 new ministers, four are from Uttar Pradesh, three from Bihar and one each from West Bengal and Jharkhand, where assembly elections are to be held between 25 November and 20 December.

Modi inducted only one woman minister— Sadhvi Niranjan Jyotifrom Uttar Pradesh. But there were several young faces, including Olympian Rajyavardhan Singh Rathorefrom Rajasthan and pop-singer-turned-politician Babul Supriyofrom West Bengal.

Y.S. Chowdharyof the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was the only member of a non-BJP NDA constituent party to be inducted.

Sunday’s cabinet expansion also saw representation from the newly created state of Telangana with Bandaru Dattatreyaof the BJP being inducted as a minister of state with independent charge.
