A recent study conducted by Inshorts and Ipsos revealed that a shocking 70% of Indians who voted are willing to re-elect Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India in the next general elections of 2019. The online poll however also showed that women’s support for the re-election of Narendra Modi was slightly lower and stood at 64 percent. Inshorts is one of India’s highest rated news application and it partnered with Ipsos, a highly regarded research firm to conduct the “Youth of the Nation” poll. This is the second edition of the poll.
Approximately 63,141 people participated in the online poll. Most of the participants belonged to the younger demography of India. The result of the survey was pretty clear and indicated the direction towards which young India leaned. Out of those who participated, 70% voted yes, 17% voted no and 13% voted undecided to the question of whether they wanted Narendra Modi back as Prime Minister in 2019. Amongst the female voters 64% voted in the affirmative, 18% voted in the negative and 18% of the voters remained undecided.
Azhar Iqubal who is the CEO and Co-Founder of Inshorts is reported to have commented on the results of the poll and said, “With the Youth of the Nation Poll, we aim to provide the country an insight into what is young urban India thinking about the most burning issues of the country and their outlook on governance, politics, business, career and technology. And to be able to do this objectively in line with the best practices of polling worldwide, this time around we are delighted to have brought premier research firm Ipsos on board to oversee and validate the survey methodology and execution.” The CEO of Ipsos also commented on the poll and said, “ Ipsos has partnered with Inshorts to conduct one of the largest Youth Polls in India. In this partnership, Inshorts provided its massive platform of young and urban newsreaders and Ipsos provided its research expertise in content, questionnaire design, data analysis, insights and validation of processes.” Adarkar also added, “Since majority of Indians are aged below 35 years, how the Youth perceives national issues across different domains is quite insightful in terms of how they are rating different initiatives. After all, these are all educated, tech savvy youngsters with a point of view. And their voice counts.”
The poll also questioned the voters on their views regarding a varied spectrum of subjects. On the question of whether campus politics should be banned in colleges, a resounding number of respondents answered in the affirmative. 61 percent of the participants voted yes, while 32 percent said no and seven percent voters were undecided. On the question of liquor ban in states, 57 per cent of the respondents were in favor of it. Another issue that was brought up was that of the rise of atrocities against Dalits and minorities in the past two years. Out of all the voters, 33 per cent said it was true and there was a rise in the atrocities while 46 per cent voted no and 21 per cent were undecided.
The poll was conducted between July 25th and August 7th 2016. The factor however was that approximately 80% of the respondents were aged below 35 and most of them hailed from various metropolitan cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad etc.
