MUMBAI: State-owned telecommunications service provider Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) said today that it has upgraded its broadband download speed to upto 1 Mbps from 512 Kbps across all the plans in Mumbai.

MTNL will provide the upgraded download speed to all new customers and existing customers can also migrate to the higher speed plan.

"This is one more customer centric lead taken by us towards providing a minimum broadbrand speed of upto 2 Mbps to all the customers by the year 2015 to usher in the National Telecom Policy 2012," company's chairman and managing director A K Garg told reporters.

MTNL provides an upload speed of 512 Kbps currently and is also planning to increase it further to 752 Kbps, its Executive Director Peeyush Agrawal said.

Presently, MTNL has 6.1 lakh customers which include 5.5 lakh broadband customers.

"Our broadband serving capacity in Mumbai is for 8 lakh customers and with this new initiative we think we will constraint our capacity in next six months," Agrawal said.

The promotional plans, launched today, will be effective for a period of 90 days, but the company may extend it depending on the market response.

MTNL also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Los Alamos Technical Associates (LATA) on November 11 for launching training programs on cyber security, risk and crisis management, public safety and disaster management, security operations management and industrial security.

LATA is an engineering, IT and technical services company providing engineering, consulting and training services.
