RE: MTNL, BSNL TO MERGE IN DEC,GET NEW AVATAR FROM FY 2016

Parliamentary panel suggests BSNL-MTNL merger

A Parliamentary panel has suggested merger of state-run telecom firms BSNL and MTNL for their long-term survival.

A Parliamentary panel has suggested merger of state-run telecom firms BSNL and MTNL for their long-term survival.

The Committee on Petitions, chaired by BJP MP Bhagat Singh Koshyari, in its report tabled in Lok Sabha today, said that it is of the "considered opinion that for the long-term survival and success, merger of MTNL and BSNL would be a good proposition..."

Their merger would give both the entities a chance for competing against private sector players, it added.

The committee was formed to look into representation received by BJP MP Arvind Sawant regarding improvement in services provided by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL).

BSNL-MTNL merger plan to be placed before Cabinet by June

The Department of Telecom is planning to place merger proposal of loss making public sector firms BSNL and MTNL before the Cabinet by June, as per a parliamentary panel report.

"On the plan for merger of BSNL and MTNL, the same would taken to Cabinet before June," the Standing Committee on Information Technology chaired by BJP MP Anurag Thakur said in its report.

The previous telecom secretary JS Deepak has informed the panel that the Department of Telecom is working on a plan but "would not say that we have a plan of integrating these two companies in phases".

Deepak said that merger of PSU like Air India and Indian Airlines has not been a happy experience.

"...but we realised that there would be some synergy in merger. We may have to do it in stages and we are working to develop a plan. I would want to take it to Cabinet before the end of June," he said.

Deepak was last month shifted with "immediate effect" from the telecom ministry and made officer on special duty in the commerce department.

The panel was informed that both the state-run telecom firms are dogged by various issues like poor quality service, lack of investment, continuous loss and MTNL is even borrowing money to meet its day to day expenses.

Deepak informed the panel that there are 3 lakh employees without required skill in BSNL and MTNL that incur liability of Rs 1,000 crore per month wage bills.

The panel recommended to the DoT that it should look in to possibility of skilling the unskilled employees and should come out with a revised VRS proposal for those who cannot be skilled.

"With regard to merger of BSNL and MTNL , the Committee recommends that the case of merger of Air India and Indian Airlines should be carefully examined while developing a merger plan and the same should be implemented with the objective to make them strong," the panel said.

Merger with BSNL desirable for strong pan-India play: MTNL CMD

The merger of BSNL and MTNL is "desirable" for operational synergy and even the fiercely- competitive telecom market necessitates such a combination for a stronger pan-India play, a top MTNL official has said.

The comment comes amid what seems to be a renewed push for BSNL-MTNL merger with a Parliamentary panel report recently noting that the Telecom Department plans to place the merger proposal before the Cabinet by June.

"The industry is consolidating. It is not an issue of BSNL and MTNL...For any operator to succeed in India a pan India operation is a must," MTNL CMD P K Purwar told PTI. BSNL-MTNL merger is a "desirable situation", he said.

RE: Merger with BSNL desirable for strong pan-India play: MTNL CMD

Firing of irrelevant and unproductive staff highly desirable for keeping bsnl/mtnl in competition with private players.
:)
Merger is irrelevant. Mtnl must first learn to compete with private players instead of making excuses like pan india presence.

DoT wants BSNL, MTNL to work together to strengthen network

The department of telecom (DoT) wants BSNL and MTNL to join hands on not just ramping up the latter’s 3G network in the National Capital Region (NCR) to ramp up service experience for customers, but also wants both the operators to pitch together for enterprise customers on a pan-India basis, utilising each other’s networks across the country.

The revenue from operations declined 23.5 per cent to Rs 220.21 crore during the second quarter of the current fiscal from Rs 287.89 crore in the year-ago period.
