Along with the launch of Moto Z and Moto Z Play , Lenovo-owned Motorola also launched the Moto Mods this year, which managed to garner a lot of attention. Moto Mods are essentially external modules that can snap on the back of the smartphones and can transform them into a battery powerhouse, a portable projector, portable stereo and much more. These Mods interact with the 16-pin magnetic port placed at the rear of the Moto Z and Moto Z Play. Up till now, Moto launched Incipico offGRID Power Pack, JBL Soundboost, InstaShare projector and the Hasselblad True Zoom mods. And now, Moto is launching two new mods a Mophie Juice Pack battery and a car dock from Incipio.
Priced at $79.99, which translates to about Rs 5,500, Mophie Juice Pack is larger in capacity than the earlier Moto Mod battery packs. It packs a 3,000mAh battery, which is said to provide 60 percent more battery life than a phone without it. The mod also features a status indicator light and a USB Type-C port so that it can be charged independently of being connected to the phone.
Incipio’s Car Dock mod, on the other hand, is priced at $64.99, which is about Rs 4,500. The mod provides a way to mount a Moto Z in a car, charge its battery, and connect it to the car’s audio system via a 3.5mm audio jack. The dock clips into the car’s air conditioning vent and can hold the phone horizontally or vertically with the magnets inside the phone. Also, when the phone is docked, it automatically launched Android Auto to provide a safer interface to a user while driving.
Moto says these mods will go on sale soon, but there’s no particular date announced. Additionally, Moto also plans to launch more mods in 2017 than it did in 2016; it’s aiming at launching four new mods per quarter. Also, Moto is encouraging development of mods through an Indiegogo campaign, which is scheduled to end in January.
Right now, there are four Moto Mods that are available in India through Flipkart and Amazon India. The Incipico offGRID Power Pack is priced at Rs 5,999, and is basically a 2,220mAh battery power pack that also adds wireless charging capabilities to the smartphone. The company claims that it can provide up to 22 hours of additional battery life.
The JBL Soundboost is pretty straightforward and basically adds two 27mm speakers to the smartphone, and in the process offers high-quality JBL stereo sound on the move. The JBL Soundboost Moto Mod is priced at Rs 6,999. Unlike standard Bluetooth speakers, the Soundboost doesn’t need to be paired with the smartphones, and instead interacts with the 16-pin magnetic port. The Moto Mod also comes with a kickstand to prop up the phone, and a 1,000mAh battery that the company says is good enough to survive 10 hours of audio playback on a single charge.
The InstaShare projector mod is priced at Rs 19,999. This portable projector can project a screen of up to 70 inches on a wall or ceiling. In other words, you can mirror absolutely anything on your phone’s screen on a much bigger display. The one disappointing aspect is that the mod projects your smartphone’s screen at only 480p resolution. The InstaShare projector too comes with a kickstand, and there is a 1,100mAh battery that is said to be good enough for up to one hour of projection.

The mod comes with a physical shutter button, grip handle and a 12-megapixel camera with 10x optical zoom, xenon flash, and also an option to shoot images in RAW. So in essence, this mod turns your smartphone into a capable point-and-shoot camera.
