Good news for Motorola Moto Z and Moto Z Force users. Motorola has confirmed that it will be rolling out security updates to these smartphones, contrary to the recent rumors that Motorola’s update policies had changed after Lenovo ’s acquisition and that it will not release regular security patch updates. Unavailability of regular updates would have left Moto Z and Moto Force to several known security risks.
Following Motorola ’s confirmation, users can now finally breathe a sigh of relief. Motorola has also announced that the smartphones will also get July Android security update, which will roll out after it goes on sale on July 28. The smartphones ship with May Android security update.
“Moto Z and Moto Z Force will be supported with patches from Android Security Bulletins. They will receive an update shortly after launch with additional patches,” AndroidAuthority quotes Motorola as saying.
The confusion about Motorola’s security update started after an Ars Technica review of the Moto Z that claimed the smartphone will not get the updates. “The new Motorola has a terrible policy when it comes to software updates. Motorola has stated the Moto Z will not be receiving Android’s monthly security updates. Since the shipping version only contains the May security patch, Motorola will be shipping an insecure phone right off the bat,” said the review.
The Moto Z and Moto Z Force replace Motorola’s X line up of smartphones. The smartphones have been confirmed to launch in India in September or October.
Moto Z specifications
The Moto Z flaunts a 5.5-inch QHD (2560×1440 pixels) AMOLED display, and is powered by a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 quad-core chipset. It also features an Adreno 530 GPU, 4GB of RAM, 32GB and 64GB storage options, microSD card slot (with support up to 2TB).
Moto Z features
On the camera front, the Moto Z is equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS). Up front and a 5-megapixel selfie camera with LED flash and a wide angle lens. It comes with a 2,600mAh battery that the company says is good enough to offer up to 30 hours of usage and it comes with Turbo charging. The Moto Z also boasts a fingerprint scanner, water-repellent nano coating, and connectivity options like 4G LTE support, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.1, and NFC. On the software front, it runs on Marshmallow 6.0.1 out-of-the-box.

The Moto Z Force shares many of the specifications and features with the Moto Z. But as the name suggests, its talking point is Motorola’s Shattershield technology. One big difference is on the photography front, and the Moto Z Force comes with a 21-megapixel rear camera. The camera features f/1.8 aperture, OIS, laser auto-focus, PDAF support, dual CCT flash, and 4K video recording capabilities. Up front, is a 5-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture. The Moto Z Force also features a 3,500mAh battery that the company says is good enough for up to 40 hours or usage.
