The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s first-ever advertisement for the posts of national selector for India senior, junior and women's teams has received a huge response, despite a strict eligibility criteria for the position.
Some of the pre-conditions specify that candidates have to be below 60 years of age, should have quit the game five years back and should not be associated with any IPL team, coaching academy or a media house.
TOI has learnt that among the former India internationals, ex-stumpers Nayan Mongia, Sameer Dighe, left-arm spinner Nilesh Kulkarni and seamer Abey Kuruvilla have applied for the post. Some of the former domestic cricketers who have applied for the job are Shishir Hattangadi, Shantanu Sugwekar, Robin Singh (jr) and Pritam Gandhe. Ex-India seamer Venkatesh Prasad, who was the chief junior selector, too has thrown his hat into the ring. The deadline for applying for the post was 5 pm IST on Wednesday.
"I am very keen to become a national selector," Mongia, who played 40 Tests and 140 ODIs for India, told TOI from Baroda. The 46year-old has been a senior and junior selector with the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) for four years.
"Having played cricket for Mumbai and India, I feel it's time to give back to the sport which has helped me build my professional career first in cricket, and later, in sports management education," said Kulkarni, a former left-arm spinner who played three Tests and 10 ODIs for India.
Dighe, who featured in six Tests and 23 ODIs, has been a selector for Mumbai at various levels, and was with the BCCI's specialised academy, which comes under the National Cricket Academy (NCA), for five years. He has coached the Tripura Ranji team too.
