Despite its fair share of controversies,
it can't be doubted that the Indian
Premier League (IPL) has been a
catalyst when it comes to increasing
the popularity of cricket in India. It has
triggered the start of numerous
leagues in other sports, most of which
have become a hit with the audience.
How about a women's IPL then? Can
India follow in the footsteps of
Australia, who introduced the
women's Big Bash League this season?
Indian women's captain Mithali Raj
certainly thinks so. At a pre-departure
presser ahead of an Australian tour
comprising of three T20I and two ODIs,
beginning January 26, Raj batted
vigorously for the idea. "It's not a bad
idea. Every second person asks me
when will the IPL have a women's
edition. I hope it's sooner rather han
later," Raj said.
