Australian left-arm quick Mitchell
Starc has decided to undergo surgery
on his ankle and is likely to miss the
World Twenty20 in India early next
year, Cricket Australia said on
Thursday.
Starc has long suffered from bone
spurs in his right ankle and decided to
take the opportunity to have an
operation to resolve the problem while
sidelined by a foot injury sustained
against New Zealand. "Mitchell met
with specialists late last week to get
an opinion on his recent foot injury
and ongoing right ankle impingement,"
the team physiotherapist David
Beakley said in a news release.
"After discussions with specialists, and
in consultation with Mitchell, we
believe the best course of action would
be for Mitchell to have the surgery for
his ankle impingement now while he is
currently laid off with the stress
fracture in his foot. Read more: Mitchell Starc to miss World T20 after ankle surgery: The Hindu - Mobile edition

Ankle surgery likely to rule Starc out of T20 WC

Mitchell Starc, Australia's pace bowling spearhead, will undergo an ankle surgery and is "unlikely" to play in the T20 WC tournament in India next year, Cricket Australia said on Thursday (December 10). Starc, who has had trouble with his right ankle stemming back to the Ashes series in England this year, suffered a stress fracture on the same foot in the day-night third Test against New Zealand in Adelaide last month.
It has now been decided that he needs ankle surgery and that will mean Starc is likely to miss the remainder of the Australia's season. The date for surgery is yet to be confirmed. "After discussions with specialists, and in consultation with Mitchell, we believe the best course of action would be for Mitchell to have the surgery for his ankle impingement now while he is currently laid off with the stress fracture in his foot," said David Beakley, the CA physiotherapist."His return to play time frames will be clearer once the surgery is complete but it is unlikely that he will be available for the T20 WC."
Starc is currently Australia's leading strike bowler and has taken 91 wickets in 25 Tests at 30.58.But it is in the limited-overs format where Starc has established himself as one of the best in the world. The lanky pacer picked up 22 wickets at 10.18 in the 2015 World Cup early this year and was adjudged the player of the tournament. In the T20 format, Starc has 26 sticks from 20 games at an impressive economy rate of 6.72 runs per over.
