Windows Phone owners have been waiting patiently for Microsoft to deliver its latest version of Windows for its smartphones called Windows 10 Mobile. While Microsoft has never officially given out a timeline, it seems that the time is near that Windows fans finally get the long coming update they rightfully deserve.
The news about the upcoming wave of updates to legacy devices comes from two sources. The first confirmation comes from an Italian website which claims that Vodafone Italy has details about the roll out on their website also jotting down the list of devices that qualify.
According to Vodafone only the Lumia 535, 635, 735, 830, 930 and Lumia 1520 qualify for the Windows 10 Mobile update, that is scheduled to begin rolling out from next week as an OTA. Oddly, the Lumia 640 and 640 XL are missing and this is strange since Microsoft had promised that these would be the first to receive the big update.
The second and more recent bit of news comes from tipster Evan Blass who also writes for VentureBeat. Blass mentions that in an email to partners, Microsoft mentions that the update would arrive in March after the monthly service updates arrive on the Lumia 950 and 950 XL.
He also mentioned that the rollout would begin passively, and “that users will need to initiate it manually from their handsets”. Post the first phase, Microsoft would begin a roll out via an OTA to eligible devices.
In short, the roll out is expected to happen in the coming weeks, but there is no way to confirm anything for now even though both sources seem to be linked via the email that was sent to partners. Hopefully Microsoft puts out a blog post giving its users an update about the same.
