Microsoft to acquire Nokia’s devices & services business, license Nokia’s patents and mapping services

REDMOND, Washington and ESPOO, Finland – Sept. 2, 2013 – Microsoft Corporation and Nokia Corporation today announced that the Boards of Directors for both companies have decided to enter into a transaction whereby Microsoft will purchase substantially all of Nokia’s Devices & Services business, license Nokia’s patents, and license and use Nokia’s mapping services.

Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will pay EUR 3.79 billion to purchase substantially all of Nokia’s Devices & Services business, and EUR 1.65 billion to license Nokia’s patents, for a total transaction price of EUR 5.44 billion in cash. Microsoft will draw upon its overseas cash resources to fund the transaction. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014, subject to approval by Nokia’s shareholders, regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.

Building on the partnership with Nokia announced in February 2011 and the increasing success of Nokia’s Lumia smartphones, Microsoft aims to accelerate the growth of its share and profit in mobile devices through faster innovation, increased synergies, and unified branding and marketing. For Nokia, this transaction is expected to be significantly accretive to earnings, strengthen its financial position, and provide a solid basis for future investment in its continuing businesses.

What a great planning and execution by Microsoft. Firstly, they make Nokia vulnerable in the smartphone market. Nokia's biggest mistake is to opt for Windows mobile OS. Now Nokia have to pay for the wrong decisions like hiring Microsoft's former employee as CEO and closing its R&D labs for mobile OS.

It was the plan by Stephen Elop, who actually is a former Microsoft employee, when he ditched symbian and opted for windows OS way back in Feb 2011. Microsoft CEO Mr Stephen Ballmer is stepping down later this year and Elop is one of the strongest names being circulated as being the contenders for the post.

Symbian should have a great OS currently if they kept the development active. I still use my symbian device sometimes.

I do have an active Nokia N 73. Microsoft has destroyed Symbian as well as Nokia.

With the new era of ios/android smartphone symbian is pretty out dated with no updates. Some stores still selling those old stocks of nokia symbian devices.

and we can add Windows in dat list as well. One of my friend is using Windows 8.1 OS i Nokia and he is realky fed up with it. No good apps and mobile gets heated.

It was the worst decision by nokia when they started focusing on windows based smart phones only. They already had their own great os like maemo, symbian etc.

I too using symbian mobile...its one of the great OS.
but windows os is also very good ..
I think its a good move , it will produce synergic effect and there will be some very good smartphone in coming days....

I still believe the lack of apps and dual core processors is not sufficient in the current era of quad core or octane processors. If Windows really want to be remain in da competition than the OS should have a great Hardware to support da powerful processors and large size RAMs.
