Micromax launched a range of 4G Volte smartphones at less than Rs 5,000, bundled with pre-activated Reliance Jio SIM and it's Happy New Year offer of free voice and data.
The new range which will start with two models - Vdeo 1 at Rs 4,400 and Vdeo 2 at Rs 4,990 - begins selling in the offline market only from Wednesday. The total range will have five models, the highest costing up to Rs 7,500.
"We think that this new series will revive sales in the sub Rs 6,000, which has shrunk by 30% on-year in the last three quarters," Shubhajit Sen, chief marketing officer at Micromax said, citing data from Counterpoint Research.
Targeting first time smartphone users, the company is pitching video calling through
Google Duo, which has also been embedded in the new devices.
The launch in India comes at a time when the company's share of the market has dropped while delayed purchases from the consumer end due to demonetisation of higher value notes, has added to woes. But the company expects normalcy to return to the market in the new year and sales to rise again.
"We expect sales of half a million units within six to eight weeks," Sen added.
Micromax expects the new range of phones to increase the rate of transition of feature phone users to smartphones, which has declined over the last few quarters due to high cost of smartphones, perceived higher cost of data usage on smartphones and lack of use cases.
The new range, which is Micromax's second such launch in entire 2016, will be made locally from this month and will be exported to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and other countries. Sales of the phone, have already begun in Russia.
The Vdeo 1 and Vdeo 2, have 4-inch VGA and 4.5-inch FWVGA displays, respectively, with 1.3 GHz quad core processor from Spreadtrum, backed by 1 GB RAM. Both have 5MP rear and 2MP front camera, and will offer free voice and data from Reliance Jio till March 2017.
