Michael Lumb becomes second Englishman to hit ton on ODI debut​

North Sound, Antigua: Michael Lumb became only the second Englishman to make a century on his one-day international debut when he reached three figures against the West Indies on Friday. His superb century, however, failed to prevent England from losing their opening match against West Indies by 15 runs.

Lumb, 34, reached his century off 109 balls having hit seven fours and two sixes as England took control of the first match in the three-game series. South African-born opener Lumb becomes the just the ninth man to hit a century on debut and the second English player after Dennis Amiss in 1972.

He and fellow debutant Moeen Ali (44) also produced the highest opening ODI partnership by debutants, surpassing the previous record of 71 held by Piet Rinke and Terry Duffin for Zimbabwe against Kenya in 2006. But following the dismissals of Moeen and Lumb (106 off 117 balls), England lost wickets cheaply and finished on 254-6 in reply to Windies' 269 all out.
