The ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) has formed a 10-member committee to formulate regulations for online media/news portals and online content.

It will also have to recommend appropriate policy formulation for online media/news portals and online content platforms including digital broadcasting which encompasses entertainment/ infotainment & news/ media aggregators, keeping in mind the extant foreign direct investment (FDI) norms, programme & advertising Code for TV channels, norms circulated by PCI code of ethics framed by NBA and norms prescribed by IBF.

The MIB secretary is the convener of the nine-member panel at present.

The journalists organized themselves using social media, particularly WhatsApp, spontaneously after news broke that the government had set up a committee to come up with a regulatory structure for online media “on the lines applicable to print and electronic media”.

Over 100 journalists and professionals, including those from dozens of online organizations, signed the petition. A website, onlinefreedomfoundation.org, has also been set up to allow ordinary citizens to oppose the move to regulate online content.
