Maruti Suzuki India’s total sales in May rose 1.9% year-on-year in May to 1.04 lakh units. On a sequential basis sales of India’s top passenger car maker were up 7%, compared with a 20% month-on-month decline it had reported in April.
However, the sales growth in May was lower than the 4.4% year-on-year growth in April.
Automobile industry sales surged over 30% in 2010-11 due to strong demand on a low base. The sales growth is expected to slow this year due to a high base effect coupled with rising interest rates.
Maruti Suzuki’s domestic sales in May rose 3.9% year-on-year to 93,519 units. Exports were down 13% from a year ago to 10,554 units.
The company’s mid-size sedans SX4 and D’Zire saw sales grow 24.2% 13,514 units. But sales in its bread and butter small car segment, which includes the Alto, WagonR, Swift, Ritz and A-Star models, slipped 2.6% year-on-year to 61,048 units.
Maruti Suzuki said in May it sold 50 units of the Kizashi luxury sedan launched in February.
