Retired Justice Mukul Mudgal has thrown his weight behind outgoing BCCI president Shashank Manohar, saying the cricket board was served by an "honest" president and his decision "showed strength of character".
Mudgal, who was appointed by the BCCI to oversee the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) matches during a turbulent T20 WC campaign earlier this year, told Times Of India, "Manohar has always been a straightforward and honest person. I don't know the exact reasons for his decision to step down but he would have weighed up the pros and cons."
Mudgal, who had also headed the probe committee that investigated the IPL betting scandal in 2013, doesn't believe Manohar's decision would have been influenced by the recommendations made by the Supreme Court-appointed RM Lodha panel.
"I think it is a personal decision made by Manohar. Although I have not thoroughly studied the Lodha recommendation, I don't think Manohar was in conflict with any of the suggestions made by the panel.
I am not privy to his decision but he might be looking at a more permanent post of ICC chairman," he said, adding: "I can't think of a better person to represent India at the ICC. It is a great honour and he's the ideal man for the job."
Manohar has shown his displeasure about some of the suggestions made by the Lodha panel, and Mudgal said, "I think it shows his character. He might disagree with the recommendations but he is prepared to abide by the court's suggestions."
