Cyberabad police have arrested a man accused of cheating e-commerce giants Flipkart and Amazon, resulting in damages of around Rs 36 lakh to the websites.
The man and his family members would first place orders of computer accessories from the two shopping websites using fake email IDs, phone numbers and addresses. Later, when couriers delivered the packages, they would remove the items from the boxes or replace them with duplicate items, accusing the sellers of sending sub-standard goods, LB Nagar Zone deputy commissioner of police Tasbeer Iqbal said.
After verification through their couriers, the companies either replaced the products or refunded the gang for the items. “The removed components are then sold to others,” Iqbal said.
The man, Pulagam Veera Raghava Reddy (25), and his family members — elder brother Ramchandra Reddy, mother Sitha Rathnam, wife Naga Laxmi and sister-in-law Sindhura – are said to have cheated Flipkart of Rs 20 lakh and Amazon of Rs 16 lakh.
The Vanasthalipuram police arrested Raghava Reddy on Thursday and seized 120 SIM cards of various mobile service providers, four computer processors and two hard-drives from his possession. The police are probing the case on the basis of a complaint filed by Flipkart.
Raghava Reddy allegedly spent Rs 10 lakh of the money he made with the help of online fraud and the police are probing his banking transactions and his family members’ accounts to check for any other cheating activities. They police are also looking for Raghava Reddy’s family members.
