LAHORE - Former Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA) president Khawaja Nadeem Ahmed has called for forming a commission comprising former judges of apex court to award Pakistan cricket TV rights through a transparent bid.

"It is imperative to constitute a commission to sell the rights at a reasonable amount rather adopting the same old procedure which creates doubts regarding the entire process," he told APP here on Wednesday.

He said the it was the utmost effort of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) suspended chairman M Zaka Asrhaf to sell the rights during his regime and that was the only reason he was interested to stay in the board. "According to the information made available, the bidding is likely to take place later this month and that is why the PCB chief was interested to stay," he said.

The ex-LCCA chief was of the view that normally the rights were sold out at cost of US dollars 150 million which was a far lesser amount compared to the other cricket boards. "Cricket Australia sells at TV right at a cost of US dollars 500 million and Pakistan being the second largest cricket playing country after India gets mere US dollars 150 million which is quite astonishing as that amount is not satisfactory keeping in view the value of the rights," he asserted.

He said PCB is fully capable of selling the right at US dollars 500 million if the bidding process is executed in a most fair and transparent way under the watchful eyes of former reputed judges of the higher courts.

"Pakistan is a top cricket playing country and its matches are billed as 'thriller' in most of the international events and when it (Pak) is playing India such matches become 'hot seller' events as million of people across the globe watch them," he said and added: "In such circumstances majority of the TV channels will be eager and in keen competition to bid higher for getting the rights." Nadeem said cricket is not mere a sport it has gained the status of a money generation industry because of televising the matches live at TV channels are spend millions of US dollars to buy the rights for the entertainment of their viewers.

"What is needed is to ensure that Pak TV rights are sold at a price which is quite reasonable and they should not be sold at a below par price and it is only possible when this process is being monitored by honest and capable individuals,” he said. "With present Chairman no more in power, there is a dire need to revamp the whole process of bidding making it public to ensure transparency besides making the PCB financially sound," he said and added: "I think our former judges are good enough to accomplish this task."
