Maharashtra Kabbadi League from September 16 on Saam TV

The second edition of the Maharashtra Kabbadi League (MKL) featuring eight men's and eight women's teams from across the state will be played at the Mhalunge Balewadi Sports Complex from September 16 to October 1.

This year, however, the league will be stage in Pune instead of in cities like last year. It is also the first time that women teams will have a league of their own.

The tournament-will be played on a league-cum-knock out basis with teams been drawn into two groups of four teams each followed by the semifinal and finals.

The men's Group 'A' consists of 
Thane Tigers, Kolhapur Hurricanes, Pune Panthers and Ratnagiri Raiders; 

while Group 'B' includes 
Sangli Royals, Raigad Dynamos, Mumbai Mahakal, Pimpri Chinchwad Challengers.

In the women's section, Group 'A' comprises 
Thane Tigers, Sangli Royals, Pimpri Chinchwad Challengers and Mumbai Mahakal; 
whereas Kolhapur Hurricanes, Ratnagiri Raiders, Pune Panthers and Raigad Dynamos are drawn in Group 'B'.

Each team consists of 15 players - seven coming through the auction and eight making it as owners' choice.

Siddharth Mehta, CEO of the MKL, informed that every team had a fund of Rs 6 lakhs to build their team. The players in the auction pool were selected from trials conducted by the Maharashtra Kabbadi Association.

Over 3500 men and women athletes attended the trails from which 300 were selected and 130 making it to the teams.

While the base price for category 'A' players comprising national and international players was pegged at Rs 30,000 each, the base price for category B comprising junior national, district and university players was Rs 20,000.

The men's and women's champions will receive a winner's prize money of Rs 5 lakh each and the runners-up Rs. 3 lakh each. Besides, awards for the best raider, man of the match and man of the series will also be given.
