LG on Wednesday unveiled what it calls the world's first Quad HD display for smartphones.
The 5.5-inch display comes in at a resolution of 2,560-by-1,440 with 538 pixels per inch, the highest resolution and ppi mobile panel to date, LG said. For comparison, the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II features 265 ppi, while LG's own 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro has 400 ppi.
The super-charged display "provides a glimpse at what's next after current Full HD smartphone panels, critical given the growing trend towards larger displays," LG said.
The Quad HD panel provides four times more pixels than a 1,280-by-720 HD display. This should provide "more life-like and crisp images, and even Blu-ray equivalent video, on their smartphones," LG said.
It should also allow for Web pages to render without image distortion, particularly when zooming in.
The Quad HD comes in at 1.21mm with a 1.2mm bezel, which is 12 percent slimmer than the 5.2-inch full HD panel LG unveiled last month.
"Based on Low Temperature Poly-Silicon (LTPS) substrate, the panel also realizes superior brightness of 430nit with improved transmittance and larger aperture opening size," LG said.
LG did not provide details on when this display might be used for smartphones in its lineup.
