It seems there will be more Motos coming from Lenovo than Phabs. If latest rumors are to be believed, the China-based smartphone maker will be using Moto branding for its future smartphones instead of using its own branding. Lenovo acquired Motorola from Google in 2014 for $2.9 billion, becoming world’s third largest smartphone maker. This comes after the company reported a 20 percent growth quarter-to-quarter even as its smartphone sales have dropped $2 billion year-on-year.

Lenovo, which is currently the number two player in the Indian smartphone market, is reportedly undergoing leadership change as well. According to a report on GSMArena , former Senior Vice President of HR Gina Qiao will be taking over for Xudong Chen, who will step down from his role as co-president/Senior Vice President. Qiao was also Lenovo’s Chief Strategy Officer earlier. While the use of Moto branding might appear positive, back in May Lenovo did admit that the purchase of Motorola has not been meeting expectations.

BGR India reached out to Lenovo seeking clarification about the speculations and here’s what a company spokesperson had to say, “We don’t comment on specific rumors or speculation. However, I will share that we’re always evaluating what brands work best and will continue to do so to ensure we do the right thing for each market. As you saw in our FYQ2 earnings last week, our smartphone business unit is gaining momentum following our recent launches. We are excited about what’s to come in 2017.”

Motorola hadn’t been fairing well under Google either. The search giant had acquired Motorola in 2012 for $12.4 billion, but failed to bring the brand back to growth. Following the purchase, Lenovo had claimed that it would revive the firm within the next 18 months and expected to sell close to 100 million devices this year. In the Q3, 2016 results, Lenovo was ousted by OPPO from its fourth position globally. Meanwhile, in India,
Lenovo has seen positive growth attributed to falling shipments from local players including Micromax, Intex and Lava. Despite the global slowdown in smartphone shipping, it is only in India that the rate continues to steadily grow owing to huge consumer demand for affordable phones along with the ongoing festival season.

About 70 percent of Lenovo’s revenue continues to be driven from its PC and laptop business and even if the smartphone sales show modest growth, it isn’t a cause for concern for the China-based manufacturer. Following Motorola’s acquisition, the company has launched a number of popular smartphones including the Motorola Z Force which comes with a shatterproof display and the recently launched Moto Z which is a modular smartphone. Lenovo’s own range of smartphones includes the Vibe and K series, some of which boast bumper batteries and top-of-the-line cameras.

Although Lenovo is not commenting on the speculated use of ‘Moto’ branding on all its future smartphones, given the popularity of the Moto brand, it makes for a sensible approach to stick to a popular moniker. But will there be a Lenovo Phab or Lenovo Vibe smartphone coming in the future? Now, this is something still shrouded in mystery. Meanwhile, we hope before the change in branding takes place, the company introduces its Phab 2 Pro in India, the world’s first Google Tango-enabled smartphone that comes with augmented reality (AR) gaming and utilities.
