Lenovo has teased the imminent launch of its P2 battery-focused smartphone in India. The company via its Twitter India handle on Monday began teasing the launch of the smartphone, however, at this point, no details of availability or price are known.
To recall, the Lenovo P2 was first unveiled at IFA 2016. The smartphone is already available in several regions globally including China, where only 4GB LPDDR4 RAM variant with 64GB of inbuilt storage has gone up for sale. Elswhere in the world, and we imagine India, 3GB/ 4GB LPDDR3 RAM variants with 32GB of inbuilt storage will be made available to buy. China pricing is CNY 2,499 (roughly Rs. 24,500), and we can expect the smartphone to be significantly cheaper in India due to the above-mentioned differences.
The dual-SIM (Nano-SIM) Lenovo P2 runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box, and sports a 5.5-inch full-HD Super AMOLED display. It is powered by a 2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 MSM8953 processor, coupled with either 3GB or 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM. The smartphone bears a 13-megapixel rear camera with a Sony IMX258 sensor and a 5-megapixel front camera.
The metal unibody Lenovo P2 packs either 32GB inbuilt storage with expandability via microSD card (up to 128GB). Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v4.1, and FM radio. Of course, the highlight of the smartphone is its 5100mAh battery with fast charging capabilities. It should be available in Champagne Gold and Graphite Grey colour variants. It measures in at 153x76x8.2mm.

Lenovo is gearing up to launch a new smartphone in India called the P2. Lenovo P2 specifications

The Lenovo P2 sports a 5.5-inch full-HD (1080p) Super AMOLED display. It is powered by Qualcomm’s 625 octa-core SoC (eight Cortex-A53 cores) clocked at 2GHz. The smartphone is offered in multiple variants — 3GB RAM + 32GB storage, 4GB RAM + 32GB storage, and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. An option to expand the storage using microSD card (hybrid SIM card slot) is also present.

In the photography department, the smartphone is equipped with a 13-megapixel rear snapper with single LED flash, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video calling. Connectivity options include dual-SIM card slots, 4G LTE with VoLTE support, Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.1, and GPS, the smartphone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS out-of-the-box. The Lenovo P2 also includes a fingerprint sensor embedded inside the home button on the front.

Lenovo P2 price

Lenovo P2 has already been launched in China with the 64GB storage variant priced at RMB 2,499, which is approximately Rs 24,500. In India, the 32GB storage variant is also expected to be launched, which is likely to get its price down in the sub-Rs 20,000 region.

At its price tag, the Lenovo P2 is likely to compete with the likes of Asus Zenfone 3 Max (ZC553KL) , which also boasts a massive battery. Priced at Rs 17,999, it features a 5.5-inch 1080p display, Snapdragon 430 octa-core SoC, 3GB of RAM, 32GB onboard storage, and microSD card slot. With a 16-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel selfie snapper, the smartphone features a 4,100mAh battery which Asus claims to offer up to 20 hours of talktime. The smartphone also includes support for reverse charging.

Lenovo P2 with 5100mAh battery, metal unibody launched, priced at Rs 16,999: specifications and features

Following on the success of the P1, Lenovo has now launched the Lenovo P2 in India, priced from Rs 16,999. Like its predecessor, the phone features a large battery and is meant to optimize battery life and efficiency, giving you more hours of usage on a single charge. The phone will be available to buy exclusively on Flipkart from 11:59pm on 11th January onwards.

The key feature of the Lenovo P2 is its 5,100mAh battery, which will keep the phone going much longer than most of its competitors. There is also a nifty hardware switch on the phone, which immediately triggers the power saver mode. This shuts off all non-essential functions, including data connectivity and most Android functions, keeping only calling, text and clock functions running. This allows you to use the phone for basic connectivity, and stretches the battery for much longer, but turns your smartphone into a dumbphone when the mode is on. You can of course flick the switch any time to go back to full functionality. It’s also possible to reverse-charge other devices using the Lenovo P2 as a power bank, and a USB-OTG adapter has been included in the box for this.

Lenovo P2 Specifications

The Lenovo P2 has a 5.5-inch full-HD Super AMOLED screen, and also features dual-SIM connectivity with 4G and VoLTE supported on both slots. However, the SIM tray is hybrid, so you will be forced into a choice between storage expansion and two SIMs at the same time. There’s also either 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and Android Marshmallow running out of the box.

The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC. This chipset strikes a good balance between performance and power efficiency, maintaining a mid-range level of performance, thanks to the use of the 14nm manufacturing process, and could arguably be better than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652.

The phone also features a fingerprint sensor, but unlike most devices in this price range, the sensor is at the front of the phone. It’s located on the physical home button, which can also be used as a gesture controller that lets you navigate around the phone without the use of the back and multi-tasking Android keys. The sensor works even with the phone on standby mode, not needing the phone to first be woken.

Charging the 5100mAh battery is through micro-USB, and the phone comes with a fast charger than can provide up to 24W of power to the phone. There’s also a 13-megapixel rear camera with dual-tone LED flash and phase detection autofocus, along with a 5-megapixel front camera.

At its Rs 16,999 price, the phone will compete with the Asus ZenFone 3 Max and Moto M directly. While the ZenFone 3 Max features a similar battery-centric approach, the Moto M is aimed at lifestyle users thanks to its focus on styling and features. The Lenovo P2 trumps over the Asus ZenFone 3 Max with more RAM, as well as a better SoC. The Moto M on the other hand features similar RAM and internal storage, but uses a MediaTek SoC and a much smaller battery.
