Kumar Sangakkara moves to 6th in all-time Test run-scorers chart
Kumar Sangakkara has taken the sixth spot in the all time run-scores list and has piped his compatriot and good friend Mahela Jayawardene. After scoring an exquisite hundred at Lord’s in the first game, the former Sri Lankan captain has now crossed his half-century and is gunning for more in the match.
Jayawardene has had a rather quiet run-phase in recent times and Sangakkara has continued to grow from strength-to-strength as a batsmen. The 2014 in particular has been outstanding for the southpaw. Earlier in the year, he brought up his first triple-century of his career against Bangladesh and played a pivotal role in the island nation winning the Asia cup and the ICC World T20 2014.
Sangakkara’s slender advantage in the run-scoring charts means that he might not long before he will be overtaken. Apart from Jayawardene, he also has another rival in Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who is less than a hundred runs short of Sangakkara. With a third Test in store against West Indies, one cannot write off the 40-year old Guyanese from taking the record away. Till then, Number six belongs to Sangakkara and he should have Brian Lara in his sights.
