David Miller during his innings at the Eden Gardens
South Africa and Kings XI Punjab batsman David Miller is undoubtedly one of the most brutal hitters of the cricket ball in the game today, and a joy to watch when in full flow. But a Kolkata police constable, who was on duty for the KKR vs Kings XI Punjab game at the Eden Gardens on May 9, unfortunately suffered the brunt of Miller’s force as a six struck by the left-hander hit him in his right eye.

The 53-year-old constable, Alok Aich, is currently undergoing treatment at a South Kolkata hospitalafter losing vision in his eye.

During the match, Miller scored 27 from just 11 balls, with 2 fours and 2 sixes, as he helped Punjab post 183 for 5 from 20 overs. The total ultimately wasn’t enough as KKR got home with a ball to spare.

When the incident occurred, those in the vicinity took swift action as he was instantly taken to the medical centre of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and subsequently to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the concerned hospital.

Former Indian skipper and CAB secretary Sourav Ganguly offered his sympathy to the constable, before adding that Miller should not be held responsible for the unfortunate incident.

Rajeev Mishra, the Special Additional and Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police, meanwhile, has promised the best treatment possible for the constable.
“This is a very tragic incident. It is extremely saddening to learn that he has lost his right eye. We are going to extend all kinds of help to him and his family. We will make sure he gets the best treatment at the hospital,” Mishra said.

Very tragic incident. Hope he gets well soon. But nothing can be done when the calibre of the batsmen are as good as C.H. Gayle, David Andrew Miller, Virender Sehwag etc.
