Kolkata New Town has taken a smart step ahead with the launch of its first designer Wi-Fi hotspot at the first rotary traffic island of the township. Hidco plan to install such designer Wi-Fi hotspots at 60 different locations across New Town.
The design of the hotspot — a white-metal fabrication — has been made by a team from IIT-Kharagpur and implemented by the Hidco engineering team. The bandwidth and router are being provided by New Town Telecom Infrastructure Development Company Limited (NTTIDCO), a joint venture company of Hidco.
Officials said the idea behind installing the designer Wi-Fi hotspots is to provide universal access to internet and create public spaces that encourages real-life socializing. “The response received from the pilot ptoject will be analysed as feedbacks. The plan is to have such hotspots at 60 different locations that have already been identified by the IIT team,” said a Hidco official, adding that the project will be expanded based on responses from the public and other sources.
It was earlier decided that based on market information, Hidco authorities will develop Wi-Fi hotspot zones at different public spaces in the township like parks, bus stations and
Metro stations as a part of the smart city concept. Broadband services would also be allowed to connect Wi-FI to private houses and commercial buildings. The technology would enable any such building to be made Wi-Fi enabled by using different access points.
Hidco authorities had decided that such Wi-Fi hotspots could be developed on public-private-partnership initiative and the finances would be structured in such a way that the private players would get a reasonable return for their investment to ensure 24-hour smooth Wi-Fi services. Also, the entire main arterial road of New Town will be Wi-Fi enabled, as it has been decided. The authorities are also installing smart poles at different parts of the township that have Wi-Fi routers.
