Google got everyone busy on the Internet a few days ago, asking them to suggest names for the latest Android version — Android N. People were pretty active on social media, especially Twitter to suggest names. While Nutella was a popular one, Indians were not going to be left behind, and one of the names suggested is Neyyappam , a South Indian sweet dish. Neyyappam may be a front-runner given the fact that it was mentioned on the official page of ‘Name Android N’.
Neyyappam is a sweet rice-based fritter fried in ghee and it has its origins in the South Indian state of Kerala. It is a favorite amongst Malayalis, well at least amongst sweet dish which starts with the letter N. Making the most of this buzz is the Kerala government, which is urging every Indian to campaign for the name Neyyappam and “lend Android N a scrumptious desi flavor.”

A Twitter handle for ‘Android Neyyappam’ was also created although it does not have many followers. The hashtag #AndroidNeyyappam seems to be running well, though. Given the fact that Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, is a native from Tamil Nadu and that Android has one of the biggest markets in India, are reasons enough that Android N should be named after an Indian sweet dish.
The other names suggested by Indians were Naan, Naan pie , Nankhatai, to name a few but Neyyappam stole the crown and may look ahead to be the winner as well. Google’s initiative doesn’t come without its share of trolls. Some of the names suggested for Android N also include ‘not getting it’, ‘not on my phone’, ‘new phone required’ among others.

Hiroshi Lockheimer, the Senior Vice-President of Android, Chrome OS , and Play recently tweeted saying that the results were very intriguing and unexpected. The battle still continues and you can go here and suggest the name Neyyappam for Android N, or not.
This isn’t the first time Indians are excitedly campaigning for naming an Android version after an Indian dessert. For the past two versions of Android, a group of Indians have campaigned for names like Kaju Katli and Ladoo to be used. The students from IIT Kharagpur had also written an open letter to Pichai for naming Android L after Lassi. The campaigns recently got an encouragement of sorts last year, when Pichai said that the next version of Android could be named after an Indian sweet dish and he would be asking his mom for suggestions.
