Well, well! What next, a devotee could well mumble when he next visits Kailasanathar Temple at Kancheepuram.

BSNL will this week make the temple Wi-Fi-friendly to showcase the grandeur of the eight-century-old temple. The temple's administrators and BSNL feel the move could be a game-changer for temple tourism, drawing more tourists to the temple built by the Pallavas.
"The facility will be inaugurated on Wednesday," BSNL (Chennai Telephones) chief general manager S M Kalavathi told TOI . The visitors can experience unlimited browsing at a speed of up to two megabytes. "We will have four Wi-Fi access points at the temple," she said.

The tourists will not have to pay a rupee for the service because the Union government is completely funding the Wi-Fi project.

The shrine is already a big draw, with pilgrims and foreign tourists lining up. The Wi-Fi facility will help shoot and upload pictures real-time and also access and download literature about the history of the monument.

Approved Tour Guides' Association president P Asoka said the Kailasanathar shrine is the biggest attraction among tourists, including international travellers, at Kancheepuram. "We observed that foreign tourists take photographs on their cellphones and send it to family members far away. This will be the prime attraction of tourists to the sight," Asoka said.

Tourists will be allowed to take pictures of the sculptures in and around the temple with the only exception being the sanctum and the main deity.

The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the Kailasanathar Temple and the daily rituals are supervised by the Hindu religious and charitable endowments department (HRCE) of the Tamil Nadu government. An HRCE official said a Wi-Fi initiative would, if nothing else, help popularise the temple among people of other countries and increase Tamil Nadu's reputation as a temple state, with more than 30,000 ancient shrines.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple was built by Pallava leader Rajasimha Pallava and completed by his son Mahendra Varma Pallava.
