Joe Root, England middle-order batsman, leapfrogged Steven Smith to become the top-ranked batsman after the latest revision to ICC Test Rankings. Root scored 88 and 71 in the recently concluded Dubai Test but was unable to prevent Pakistan from taking a one-nil lead in the three-match series.
Root, who trailed Smith by 13 points heading into the second Test, now leads the Australian skipper by three points. With 1278 runs from 12 Tests at 67.28, Root is the leading run-scorer in 2015. He will have another opportunity, when England take on Pakistan in the 3rd Test, to extend his advantage at the top of the rankings table before Australia begin their home season of cricket.
Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan also climbed up the table following the Dubai Test. Younis, who became the first Pakistan batsman to aggregate 9000 Test runs, moved back into the top-5 while Misbah moved up five places to 11th place following scores of 102 and 87.
The Dubai Test was also a memorable one for Pakistani leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who achieved the No.2 ranking for the first time in his career. Yasir picked up eight for 180 in Pakistan's 178 runs victory, which earned him 25 points. This has enabled him to leapfrog the pace trio of England's James Anderson and Stuart Broad, and New Zealand's Trent Boult.
