It's 2020. Can we have those carrier locked phones like US telecom operators offers instead of useless offers like this?

With the sudden hike in GST. Renting phones by paying in bits makes sense. Customers gets to own flagship models and mobile operators can keep customer's freedom of porting out locked. Manufacturer gets to cater to a larger base when the market is in decline. It's a win-win for all.

That's highly unlikely in India, coz Indians will get the phone at a discounted price from the carrier, then unlock it by spending 500rs and then use it with a different carrier prepaid plan and stop paying the postpaid bill of the original carrier. So unless the issuing carrier can get a collateral pledged by the buyer with the amount equivalent to the price of the phone which can be encashed in the case that he defaults the payment, this concept wont work here.
