NEW DELHI: Reliance Jio is planning a bigger push for its LYF handset portfolio, sold by Reliance Retail, by launching an ultra-affordable Android Go OS-based smartphones in partnership with Taiwanese chipset maker MediaTek. The 4G entrant is charting out an aggressive strategy, and may soon place orders for millions of units for the device, people familiar with the matter said.
According to a person familiar with the matter, Jio is planning an aggressive plan with units in millions to target the feature phone segment that are looking to migrate to smartphones.
“Since Jio believes in subsidizing smartphones for mass uptake, they are most likely to take the same approach for their Android Go smartphone,” the person said. The chipset vendor has confirmed its association with the Mukesh Ambani-led 4G telecom operator.
“Jio is bullish on Android Go smartphone, and is working with us and the ODM partners to bring the device to the market in coming months. They have really pushed us to deliever Android Go based device as soon as possible,” Kuldeep Malik, country head for Corporate Sales International, MediaTek India, told ET.
