Atapattu resigns from a position he held for 15 months since taking over from Paul Farbrace in May 2014.
Jerome Jayaratne has been appointed the interim coach of the Sri Lankan team. Jayaratne, 49, is a former first-class player who played for Colombo Cricket Club in the 1980s and 1990s, and is currently Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) head of coaching.
His appointment on Monday (September 7) came in the wake of Marvan Atapattu’s resignation following the team’s 2-1 Test series loss against India. Atapattu was the head coach from October 2014 to August 2015 after taking over from Paul Farbrace, who had resigned to join England as their assistant coach.
Jayaratne will take charge for Sri Lanka’s upcoming home series against West Indies in October and November that comprises two Tests, three One-Day Internationals and two Twenty20 Internationals, with the first Test starting on October 14.
Jayaratne also represented Sri Lanka at the Under-19 and Under-23 levels. He joined SLC in 2001 as the coaching manager, holding the position till 2004. From 2005 to 2007-08, he was in charge of the SLC 'Academy Squad', after which he was appointed the head of coaching.
In his first-class career, Jayaratne, who bowled medium pace, took 34 wickets in 22 matches at 21.88, while scoring 391 runs in 28 innings at 18.61. He also played three List A matches.
