Jimmy Anderson came back in the England fold after a lengthy gap and he made amends for his penultimate ball dismissal two years ago against Sri Lanka by making mincemeat out of the batsmen. On seaming conditions in Headingley, the English pace ace ripped through the top order of the hapless Lankans, who were putting up a tame reply to England’s fighting 298 in the first innings. The 33-year-old had gone past Indian legend Kapil Dev, who held the record for nearly a decade, finishing his career with 434 scalps. Skipper Angelo Mathews became Anderson’s 435th wicket, after he was adjudged leg before.

There were other milestones to chase too as Alastair Cook was only 64 short of 10,000 runs. If he goes on to do it anytime soon, the English skipper would become the quickest to do so, going past another Indian legend, Sachin Tendulkar. The Anderson show continues to reign supreme; It was barely a year ago that he went on to create an English record, going past Sir Ian Botham.

England are playing Sri Lanka as the new season kicks off and the hosts are in the driver’s seat in the first Test. England lost their top order cheaply to Dasun Shanaka before being rescued by brilliant rearguard action from opener Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow, who scored his second ton. Anderson had removed Kaushal Silva to equal Kapil Dev, and had Mathews trapped in front. Replays showed that the ball was missing the stumps and Mathews had gone against reviewing the decision. Then, Shanaka fell first ball and Anderson was on a hat-trick. Anderson is now 6th on the all-time list, with Courtney Walsh ahead of him.
