Fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who played a key role in India's historic series win in Sri Lanka, has been handed a one-match ban for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the third and final Test of the Cricbuzz Cup in Colombo. The lanky pacer will miss the first Test against South Africa in Mohali from November 5. Sri Lanka's Dinesh Chandimal has also been handed a ban, which he will serve by sitting out of the first ODI against the West Indies on November 1. The other two players guilty of breaching the code of conduct, Lahiru Thirimanne and Dhammika Prasad, have been fined 50 per cent of their match fees. The incident happened in the 76th over when Chandimal made deliberate physical contact with Sharma when Indias number-11 batsman was in the middle of a heated exchange with fast bowler Dhammika.
Tempers flared in the final session of Day 4 on Monday as Ishant and the Sri Lankan fielders had a heated exchange after Dhammika bowled three consecutive bouncers to the Indian tailender. Dhammmika stared at Ishant each time after bowling a bouncer and the No. 11 batsman, who managed a single after the barrage of short deliveries, pointed to his helmet while running to the non-striker's end, apparently signalling to the bowler that he did not hit his target.
Chandimal then nudged Ishant with his shoulder, forcing umpires Nigel Llong and Rod Tucker to intervene and calm down the players while R Ashwin was also involved in an animated chat. As Ishant hurried off the field after the Indian innings ended with Ashwin's dismissal, Dhammika sprinted behind him and television pictures showed the two players speaking to each other outside the dressing rooms.
Ishant Sharma, who was fined 65 percent of his match fee for misconduct during the second Test, vented his anger with the ball when he picked up two wickets in Sri Lanka's second innings.
