Is Google about to say goodbye to the Nexus line next year?
End of the line?
Will Google stop the Nexus line of smartphones and tablets by 2015? That’s what Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin claims. It should be noted that Murtazin’s recent claims haven’t all been true, though he did have a stellar record for getting information before the launch. He had previously tweeted out about the iPad 2 would come with a USB port which certainly didn’t happen, although he was spot on with some Samsung predictions last year.
According to Murtazin’s tweet,“Nexus line by Google is over in 2015 Yes – this line will be replaced by Play Edition (current name, it will be rebranded).” Besides the end of Nexus series, Murtazin also tweeted about how Samsung-Google’s cross-licensing patent deal will work. According to his tweets, Samsung will not only get patents for Google, but will also secure hardware development. He said that Samsung could launch Google Play Edition devices from Samsung in the near future and it would stop working on Tizen.
As far as the Tizen rumour is concerned, this is not the first time that Murtazin has talked about the OS being dead. He had earlier tweeted in July 2013, the OS was dead given that Samsung had delayed the first Tizen smartphone by two months. However given that Samsung had later announced an app developer contest for Tizen with a $4 million prize, it kind of put an end to the Tizen is dead news.
Where the Nexus line is concerned, it seems hard to believe that Google would give up on that considering that they have been a highly successful devices. And given that Google has released Play Editions version of Galaxy S4, HTC One, and a bunch of other phones, it’s hard to figure out why they would want to dump the Nexus series altogether.
