Manipuri rights activist Irom Sharmila announced to quit her 16-year-long protest against Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Manipur on August 9. Irom Sharmila will give up fast and contest Manipur Assembly election as an independent candidate. The 42-year-old human rights activist told media persons outside Imphal court that she will break her fast on August 9 and contest polls.
Irom Sharmila, known as the Iron Lady of Manipur, began her fast in November 2000 after ten people were killed in a shooting at a bus stop near her home in Manipur. Activists blame the army for the killings but no arrests have been made in case. She has been demanding repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, which gives unbridled powers to the armed forces.
In March this year, a Delhi court acquitted Irom Sharmila in a case of allegedly trying to commit suicide while undertaking fast- unto-death at Jantar Mantar here in 2006 demanding scrapping of AFSPA. After the judgement was passed, Sharmila said her struggle would continue till AFSPA is revoked. She was put on trial on March 4, 2013, for allegedly trying to commit suicide while undertaking a fast-unto-death at Jantar Mantar on October 4, 2006.
