The 2017 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will kick off on 5 April while the players’ auction will be held in Bengaluru on 4 February. The opening ceremony and the final of the IPL 2017 will be hosted by defending champions Hyderabad Sunrisers.

The decisions were taken at an IPL governing council meeting attended by chairman Rajeev Shukla, BCCI president Anurag Thakur, BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke, former India captain Sourav Ganguly, Jharkhand Cricket Association (JCA) president Amitabh Choudhary and Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) president MP Pandove.

The IPL 2017 runs the risk of violating the Supreme Court–appointed Justice RN Lodha Committee’s recommendations of keeping a two-week gap between the IPL and international series.

There is hardly a one-week gap between the India–Australia Test series, which will conclude on 29 March, and the IPL, which starts on 5 April.

The BCCI’s commercial agreements with broadcasters and sponsors for the IPL will come to an end in 2017. The board had initiated the process of selling media rights for IPL. The tenders were bought by 18 companies. However, the Supreme Court passed an order stating that the BCCI cannot sign high-value contracts without the Lodha panel’s approval. The tender process has been in a limbo since then.

“IPL 10 will start on April 5 next year. The auction will be held in Bengaluru on 4 February. We had to keep a gap of one week after the Australia series,” IANS quotes IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla as saying after the meeting.

Shukla also said that Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur will host IPL matches in 2017. These venues were not able to host any IPL matches in 2016 due to severe drought situation in Maharashtra.

The BCCI will use water harvesting technology in Maharashtra to ensure minimum wastage during IPL matches. “We intend to generate our own water to maintain pitches and outfields during the IPL,” he said.

Shukla also said that the workshop for IPL franchises would be organised in Dubai.
