Former world number one Serena Williams withdrew from the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Wednesday after aggravating a right toe injury.

The 29-year-old had been due to play 10th seed Samantha Stosur who she beat to win the Rogers Cup in Toronto last week in the second round on Wednesday.

However, she pulled out with the US Open in New York starting on August 29.

Williams revealed the injury was not serious but admits she did not want take any risks so close to the US Open.

She said: "It's not nearly extreme, it's just a bit of an aggravation because I think I've been pounding it a lot and playing a lot.

"I don't think this is a good time for me to take a big chance. I just don't think that would be smart.

"I'm definitely disappointed, but at the same time I have a lot to look forward to. If anything, this might be a blessing in disguise. I might get some more rest and prepare for the rest of the year."

On whether her chances at Flushing Meadow would be affected, Williams added: "If anything, it'll make them better, maybe because I have more opportunity to rest up and get 200% healthy, which could be a very dangerous thing."
