The Telecommunications Bill, 2023, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday. The bill allows the government to take over, manage or suspend telecommunication services or a network over national security, reports India Today.

The New Telecom Bill 2023

Acquiring SIM fraudulently using someone else’s identity proof will now be punishable.

Three years imprisonment / fifty lakh rupees penalty for acquiring SIM using fake/forged document.

Three years imprisonment / fifty lakh rupees penalty for spoofing of telephone number

Three years imprisonment / fifty lakh rupees penalty on using telecom service via SIM Box etc

"Do Not Disturb" register gets legal mandate to protect users from unsolicited commercial (spam) messages and calls

Online grievance redressal mechanism for addressing grievances of users

1885 Act contains no mention of spectrum. Definition of spectrum clearly mentioned in the Bill.
 
No bill passed against spam messages via OTT apps like whatsapp, viber, telegran, signal etc.

These provisions will allow optimal utilisation of spectrum, prohibition of use of equipment which block telecommunications and criteria for appointment as Chairperson and members of TRAI
