Finally, good news for Assam, as Govt is taking the flood problem of Assam seriously.

Union Minister of Roads, Highways and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said Bangladesh has accorded necessary clearance for dredging river Brahmaputra from Sadiya in Assam to Chittagong port in Bangladesh.

Gadkari, who was in Guwahati to participate in ongoing river festival Namami Brahmaputra, said necessary formalities with the Bangladesh Government has also been completed for dredging of river Brahmaputra.

Gadkari stated that once the project is materialized, this will change the entire economic corridor of Assam as Brahmaputra National waterway-II will have direct access to Chittagong port of Bangladesh, Haldia port of West Bengal and consequently will boost up trade with the south east Asian nations.

Gadkari also stated that Government of India will provide funds for development of 56 jetties on the banks of Brahmaputra.

Brahmaputra carries huge silt which makes river transport very difficult. Brahmaputra is known as Padma in Bangladesh.

Gadkari also asked the state government for identifying places on the banks of Brahmaputra which can be developed into ports and submit their feasibility report to the union ministry.

The union minister expressed satisfaction over the progress of works carried out by the state government for construction of Brahmaputra Express Highways on both banks of the river, survey for which has already been completed.

Gadkari also stated that the entire 1300-km stretch of the surveyed land will be converted into express highway.
