HYDERABAD: Indian badminton will
hit another high at the Rio Olympic
Games next year. The shuttle sport,
which is growing rapidly in the
country due to the tireless
contribution of coach Pullela
Gopichand and the sensational
performances of Saina Nehwal,
Kidambi Srikanth, PV Sindhu and
Parupalli Kashyap, is set to get a
bigger representation from India at
the Olympics.
If there are no major shakeups in
the world rankings, Indians look
good to win more quota places at
the quadrennial event. Ever since
badminton made its debut in the
1992 Barcelona Olympics, India has
had only one representation each in
the five categories - men's singles,
women's singles, men's doubles,
women's doubles and mixed
doubles. But by the virtue of their
stupendous performances, Indians
are likely to have two players each
in the men's and women's singles in
Rio.
