India need Cheteshwar Pujara, Zaheer Khan in ODIs: Sourav Ganguly​

Kolkata: India need Cheteshwar Pujara and Zaheer Khan in their one-day line up, former captain Sourav Ganguly said on Sunday as India began their New Zealand tour with a defeat in Napier.

Criticising Ishant's selection, Ganguly felt India leaked too many runs even as they had the "world's best" one-day batsman in Virat Kohli. "I feel selectors should think about two players - Cheteshwar Pujara and Zaheer Khan. Pujara is the most-needed batsman in these conditions. He has adjusted well in the Test mould and I'm sure he will do well in the ODI format," Ganguly said.

"Similarly Zaheer is must-needed in the bowling attack. If he can bowl 30 overs in Tests, why can't he do that for 10 overs?" he asked. Questioning the selection of the lanky pacer who conceded eight runs per over in the first ODI today, Ganguly quipped "Ishant Sharma remains to be an enigma to me."


Criticising Ishant's selection, Ganguly felt India leaked too many runs even as they had the 'world's best' one-day batsman in Virat Kohli.

"He is the seniormost Indian bowler with experience. But he has been inconsistent under pressure as Mohammad Shami has become the backbone of Indian bowling. He's no doubt the find of Indian cricket as I've said earlier," he said. Ganguly hoped that Bengal pacer Ashoke Dinda will make a comeback after his Ranji performance this season.

"I hope Dinda will get a chance this year. He is good in his length and line." Ganguly also hailed Kohli who scored his 18th century to keep India in the hunt in their chase of 293 before being bundled out for 268 to trail 0-1 in the five-ODI series.

"He is no doubt the best one-day batsman in the world at the moment. He has scored runs in all parts of the world. But the target proved too much in such conditions. In India, it would have been easy," Ganguly told a Bengali news channel.

Bengal might be staring at an innings defeat against Maharashtra in their Ranji semifinals in Indore, but the city's favourite cricket icon said Laxmi Ratan Shukla should not lose heart after their commendable performance in the Ranji season.

"It's really unfortunate, the match seems to have gone out of their hand. It seems toss became crucial. But they should rejoice about their performance this season. Hope they go forward from here," he said.

Sourav Ganguly is right.India needs Pujara and Zaheer.Zaheer needs to come in place of Ishant while Pujara should come in the place of Rohit.

50 ovs is a big game, as we have gotten used to 20 ovs. More often we see, teams not playing alloted 50 ovs or they loose too many wickets, before the final ovs start.

Pujara will play the role of sheet-anchor, just like dravid did. He is technically correct, also we dont need all slam-bam type of players. :win

He shud be only selected, when India plays @home, otherwise he is a sitting duck against short pitch bowling on fast bouncy pitches. :angry

I think Raina should go to Manjrerkar/Gavaskar and take some advice on how to play Short Pitched Delivery.If he sorts out his Short pitched delivery problem then he will become more good player.He is a world class player,he just needs to sort out problems.

I think Zaheer is the best choice to get in place of Ishant.Ishant is a world class low standard bowler who doesn't know to bowl in good areas.Even Dhoni is better than him in bowling.

Ravindra jadeja or Ravi ashwin replacement also important.India can't play two spinners in abroad.Ravindra jadeja not contributing with bat and Ravi ashwin not contributing with bowl.Ravi ashwin bowling average is so bad in abroad,average is 140.Stuart binny is good replacement.Ravi ashwin,suresh raina and Ishant sharma these three are not deserve to be in Indian squad,they are already get so much chances.If Gautam gambhir,Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan singh are out from the Indian team,then why these three are still in the Indian squad.I think Gautam gambhir atleast to be consider for the the test team,but what's problem for BCCI with Gautam gambhir that are still not selecting Gautam gambhir for the test squad.Even BCCI not selected Gautam gambhir in 30 probables list for upcoming T20 world cup.:angry:angry

Ravi ashwin is good bowler in turning tracks not in seaming tracks.So,he is not deserving to play outside sub-continent.Harbhajan singh required in the team becoz he is good bowler than Ravi ashwin outside sub-continent.
