Cricket buffs in the city are in for a bumper cricketing year. Rajkot is likely to see the first-ever Test match to be played in their city by the end of this year.

Niranjan Shah, honorary secretary of the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) said that since its stadium was accorded with Test status last year, the people of Rajkot will get to enjoy the longer version of the game this year.

"There are eight Tests slotted to be played in India this year. The New Zealanders will be coming in October for three Tests while the England team will tour India in November to play five Tests. Most likely , SCA will get to host one of the England Test matches," the veteran administrator told TOI.

After two one-day internationals already in 2013 (India-England) and 2015 (India-South Africa), SCA's stadium in Khandheri is now hosting the Indian Premier League (IPL).The home team Gujarat Lions will enthral the crowd for as many as five T20 matches.

Rajkot's own Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara, who has played 32 Tests for India so far, was delighted when he was told that his city will witness the five-day format of the game. "It will be a big thing in Rajkot and people will love it.Ours is a small town and people here appreciate every kind of cricket being played here," he said.
