The International Cricket Council (ICC) had come up with a new points plan for the Test rankings. The new policy will govern the points plan for the Test Championship which will come into effect from the summer of 2019. In a very interesting change, the positions of the teams will keep changing after ever match played. Under the present setup, the rankings are changed only after the series comes to an end.

Now, the new rules are set to see the teams getting their points after every game. Certainly, with time, the pros and cons of the new system will come to the fore. For now, the move sounds like an interesting one. Among the other notable changes is the rewards system for overseas wins.

Explanation of the points system: As per the article:

The points allocation can be illustrated as follows. If the total points on offer for a five-match series in 100, then each match will have 20 points on offer. If it is a two-match series, each match will have 50 points. If a match ends in a draw in a 5-match series, the teams will get 6.67 points each. At the same time, if the teams draw a match in 2-match series, they will get 16.67 points each.

This, in essence, shows that a if a team wins and a draws a match in 2-match series, they will have 66.67 points. This will be more than a team that wins two matches and draws three matches in a five-match series, as they will only have 60 points to their name despite winning the series 2-0.
Height of stupidity!!! How come this be effective. India, Australia and England are the only teams to play 5 matches. When they wanted to update points table after each match then why cant they allocate points seperately for each match rather than the whole series. A two match series and a 5 match series will get only 100 points?? If they are trying to stop India, Australia and England playing 5 match series among themselves by implementing this new points system then its even more worse. There should be some other ways to make every team play equal number of matches.

ICC really needs to design a Test Match World Cup
There's already a test championship played to be played between 2019-2021. And they are trying hard to make it a success. Actually it was planned to be played in 2017 itself but they wanted India's ranking to become better and not create any confusion over their participation at the top level. So they said some bland reasons to postpone it to 2019 and as expected now India are the number side and will be in Tier 1 along with the best of teams.

Playing a World Cup for 2 years would hardly be interesting
It is actually a championship like the championship maze we currently have at present for the number 1 ranked team and not exactly a world cup tournament. And it would not be realistically possible if they plan it as a seperate tournament. The currently planned format of playing 3 or 5 match series both home and away against each opposition in the top 6 would be ideal to give much more importance to test matches.

Now it will be interesting to see whether India and Pakiatan would at home and away if Pakistan also is in the Top 6 teams. If that happens it would be even more interesting. The last India vs Pakistan test series I rememher is when Dhoni got his 1st Test Century smashing the likes of Shoaib Akthar in Pakistan.
