Hyperloop in talks with Indian government to start trials: Report
Elon Musk-led company is currently awaiting a nod from Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Elon Musk’s ambitious Hyperloop transportation may soon start conducting trials in India. According to reports, the company is in talks with the government, and is said to be currently awaiting a nod from Union Minister for Transport Nitin Gadkari.
Gadkari is said to have a Letter of Intent (LOI) on his table, which if signed, could kick off Hyperloop trials in India. “The proposal is on Mr Gadkari’s table. We are ready,” Bibop G Gresta, co-founder at Elon Musk-backed Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT), told FactorDaily. Upon clearance, the company says that the first Hyperloop can be built in about 38 months. The first few months will be spent in conducting feasibility study, followed by acquiring land permits and the necessary permits.
Hyperloop is essentially a futuristic train, which Musk describes as a “a cross between a Concorde, a railgun and an air hockey table.” These trains travel in a vacuum tube in what is called very high speed transit (VHST), and can touch speeds of over 1,200 kilometers per hour. Apart from being super-fast, Hyperloop is also environment friendly as it only uses air for propulsion and runs along magnetic tracks
Gresta has said that he has met both Gadkari and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and both have expressed their interest in the project. “They are really willing to make a change in this country. Actually, we are discussing a project here in India. We are on the table to do a feasibility study for a big route,” Gresta told the publication.
Gresta’s comments come after recent reports, which claimed that Gadkari had invited Hyperloop to start testing in India. Gadkari is said to have offered land for a manufacturing facility, and also asked the company to test their transport technology alongside the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. With the help of Hyperloop, the distance between Mumbai and Pune can be covered in just 30 minutes.
