At its global launched event in Germany, Huawei has finally taken the wraps off two new smartphones under its Mate-series at a press conference in Germany. Called the Mate 9 and a special edition Mate 9 Porsche Design, both smartphones feature Leica-engineered dual rear cameras, just like the Huawei P9. Also, while the Mate 9 comes with a flat panel display, the ‘Porsche Design’ model comes with a dual edge curved display, something similar to what we have already seen on the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 and Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge.

Talking about the design, both smartphones feature a metal unibody design. The Mate 9 has a 3.5mm audio and USB Type-C ports at the bottom. The right edge has power / sleep buttons and the volume rocker, whereas the left edge as the SIM card tray. On the front, you have the earpiece and selfie camera module above the display. Turn to the back and you have the dual camera module, laser auto-focus module, dual-LED flash and a fingerprint scanner just below it. The ‘Porsche Design’ variant shares the same buttons placement as the Mate 9, but the fingerprint scanner has been moved on the front, just below the display. It comes with a ‘Smart Touch’ feature, one touch fingerprint scanning and gesture recognition – single tap for back, long tap for home and swipe left or right to switch apps. Both smartphones will be offered in six color options – mocha, black, white (glossy), gold, space grey, silver.

Unlike the Huawei P9 which featured a pair of 12-megapixel snappers at the back, the new Mate 9 and Mate 9 Porsche Design are equipped with one 12-megapixel RGB color sensor and a slightly higher resolution 20-megapixel monochrome sensor. Co-developed by Leica, the camera comes with dual-core ISP, depth measurement ISP and professional DSP for better image focusing speeds and processing. The dual camera setup allows users to capture photos with great details, colors and sharpness, even in low light, Huawei says. The camera also supports 4K video recording capabilities.

Huawei has also added other features to the camera, such as contrast focus, hybrid auto-focus, laser auto-focus and depth focus feature, which adds DSLR-like blur effects. While the P9 camera missed out on optical image stabilization, the same is present on the Mate 9 and Mate 9 Porsche Design. Up front is an 8-megapixel camera of aperture f/2.4 for selfies, video calling and 1080p video recording capabilities.

Huawei Mate 9, Mate 9 Porsche Design specifications

Both the Mate 9 and Mate 9 Porsche Design share similar set of specifications, albeit a few differences. The Mate 9 sports a 5.9-inch full HD (1080p) display, whereas the Porsche Design variant comes with a 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED dual edge curved display running at a resolution of 2560×1440pixels. The bump in resolution of the ‘Porsche Design’ variant is to make it compatible with Google’s upcoming Daydream VR headset.

At the heart of both smartphones runs Huawei’s homebrew Kirin 960 octa-core processor. Built on 16nm FinFET process, the features four Cortex A73 cores clocked at 2.4GHz and four Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. It is paired with ARM’s Mali G71 MP8 GPU and 4GB of RAM and 64GB and 128GB onboard storage options. The Mate 9 Porsche Design, on the other hand, comes with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage. A microSD card slot for further expansion is also present in both smartphones.

The Mate 9 and Mate 9 Porsche Design are armed with 4,000mAh non-removable batteries along with fast charging feature that can charge up to 50 percent in 32 minutes.
