Hike Messenger on Thursday launched 'Hike direct', which will allow users to chat, exchange stickers, transfer photos and heavy files of any type without using the Internet and without incurring data charges.

It will allow mobile phones to connect directly with one another directly within a 100 metre radius completely by passing the telecom networks, the company said.

Users can then chat and share files directly up to a speed of 40Mbps with low latency, which is comparable if not better than 4G speeds, it said.

"Hike direct has been built on breakthrough technology that adds a whole new dimension to messaging enabling hikers to chat and share files with their friends without the Internet. Data or no data, Hike will always work," Kavin Mittal, founder and Chief Executive Officer, Hike Messenger, said here at the launch.

Launched in December 2012, Hike has acquired 70 million users as of September, making it the second largest messaging app in the country.
